The executive board has approved two changes to the by-laws. There were 43 members of the executive board who cast votes on the changes. Both changes passed.
Article IX Section 5 addresses the process to be followed when there is only one candidate nominated for an office. It removes a write-in candidate and negates the need for an election. In accordance with Roberts Rules of Order, it allows the President to direct the Recording/Corresponding Officer to cast one vote for the unopposed candidates. The rationale for this change is that for the past several years elected positions have been unopposed with minimal (if any) write-in candidates. The proposed change would eliminate the financial cost in terms of ballots and/or staff time. The new wording is as follows with the changes in italics.
The Nominating Committee shall submit a slate of two (2) or more nominees for each elective office to the Board of Trustees prior to December 1. Candidate names may be submitted to the Chairman of the Nominating Committee before November 15th. If the minimum of two nominees cannot be found by November 15, only one candidate may be offered for elective office. Unopposed candidates negate the need for an election. At the Annual Meeting, the President will direct the Recording/Corresponding Officer to cast one vote for the unopposed candidates.
ARTICLE IV, Section 3 This addresses the process for succession to Presidency when there is an appointed Trustee. The rational for this change is to stipulate the requirements for an appointed Trustee to succeed to the Office of the President. This allows the individual training time that is extremely important prior to moving to the Office of the President and helps to ensure a smooth transition. The new wording is as follows.
In case of inability or absence for any cause of the President, the Vice President – Operations shall perform the duties of that office (temporarily or until the next Presidential election). Should the Vice President – Operations be unable to fulfill the duties of President, the order of succession would be Vice President – Programs and then Vice President – Planning & Development. The position of Vice President – Operations would be filled temporarily (or until next election for that position) by either a shuffle within the existing Trustee positions or a non-elected appointee approved by the elected Trustees. An appointee to any Trustee position may succeed to the Office of the President after fulfilling the expired term to which he/she was appointed and after being duly elected to that or another Trustee position.
What all this means is that you will not receive a ballot in the March printed “Camping Today”. We only have one candidate for each position up for election. President is up for election with Shari Weber the only nomination. Vice President of Programs is also up for election with George Walters as the only nomination and an incumbent to the position. Recording/Corresponding Officer is also up for election with Sue Carlsen as the only nomination and an incumbent to the position. Each nominee has submitted information to the March printed “Camping Today” about themselves and their goals for our organization.
