Goodnight, Campsite – reading on YouTube

Written by Loretta Sponsler, Illustrated by Olga Shevchenko

Goodnight, Campsite is an award-winning children’s book on camping, featuring more than tents. Our book highlights RVs – Travel Trailers, Fifth-Wheels, Pop-Ups, Class A, Class C, and other camper options. The story takes place in a beautiful nature park and follows visitors as they explore the park during the day (hiking, biking, fishing, etc.), and then returns with them to their campsite at night.

Preschool-aged children will love the beautiful and colorful pictures – and searching for the squirrel hiding in the pictures. Rhyming text will keep children engaged, as they build sound associations and phonemic skills.

About the Author

Loretta Sponsler is the award-winning author of “Goodnight, Campsite” and “The Tent Mouse and the RV Mouse.” A New Mexico native, she currently calls Michigan home. She is a full-time mom, part-time writer, and all-the-time cheerleader of reading and children’s books.

A Love of Camping and Nature

The Sponslers have always been an outdoor-loving family, with free time spent hiking, biking, camping, and exploring. When their second son was born, they transitioned from a tent to an RV and never looked back.

“I loved camping in a tent, but as I got older, the appeal of a more substantial camping option was just too great,” Loretta said. “I love our RV and can’t imagine vacationing without it.”

Search of Children’s Books on RV Camping

When the Sponsler family started RV camping, Loretta looked around for camping books with an RV focus, opposed to just tents.

“Our boys love books, and snuggling up with a good book is one of our favorite things. So, of course, I wanted a camping book to bring on our adventures,” Loretta said. She went on to explain that while general camping books abound, specific books featuring RVs were few and far between. So she wrote one, two actually.

In 2016 her debut picture book, “Goodnight, Campsite” won 1st Place in the Outdoor Recreation category of the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards contest, which recognizes excellence in children’s literature. In 2019 her next picture book, “The Tent Mouse and the RV Mouse” was released, quickly climbing Amazon’s sales ranking and gathering 5-star customers reviews.

On the Road with the Military

Loretta’s husband is in the active duty Army, with 24 years of service, and their family moves often with his career.

“In 2017 we moved from California to Massachusetts, our farthest move to date. We traveled through 16 states on our road trip,” Loretta said. “We love having our RV to both vacation in and when it comes time to move to our next duty station. And yes, we always bring lots of books with us on our journeys!”
